Settling In

Thanks so much for all the supportive comments from my last post about Rob’s Mom passing away. Losing a parent is such a hard thing that you never truly get over it — it just gets easier to handle with time. I lost my dad 9 years ago and I still think about and miss him. Having Liam has been a big comfort for Rob and helped keep him busy so he doesn’t have as much time for sadness.
This week feels like we’ve started another new chapter in our lives. Rob & I both returned to work full time and Liam started daycare. We all survived the week, but we’re all exhausted. I’m sure missing those afternoon naps that I got used to having everyday!
The first day of daycare he didn’t know what was up so he couldn’t wait to leave us and start playing with all the kids but everyday since there’ve been tears as we drop him off. They tell us that he stops crying right after we leave and laughs and has fun the rest of the day. He also suffered an injury on his first day. I got a call that he was sitting on a bench eating lunch and leaned back too far and fell off. But they said he didn’t cry — he just got up and went back to eating. Nothing keeps him from his food for too long! ;-)
Here’s a picture of him at his first day of daycare:

We’ve noticed quite an improvement in his speech after his first week. He’s talking way more than before (although it’s still mostly gibberish) and he’s learned to say 2 new words this week: "Hello" and "car." His "hello" sounds a bit odd and we aren’t sure why he says it that way. It is definitely not with a Texas accent! ;-) Here’s a video of him practicing:
I’m still trying to get caught up on all of the adoption blogs, but I’m really happy to hear about the flurry of activity in the past few weeks. Can’t wait to see all of the "Gotcha" photos!

That is the cutest video! It sounds like a British accent - "Allo!" :-) Maybe you'll have a multi-lingual guy on your hands! I'm so glad Rob is hanging in there. I also lost my mom about 7 years ago and it is still hard each and every day. Thankfully, Liam is bringing such a light to your lives! I'm so glad daycare is going well despite the crying. Honestly, I think I'm going to cry more than the Peanut when we first take him to daycare! :-) Thanks for posting and keeping us updated!
Ummm... to correct myself (it's late and I have slept since 3:15 am!) I didn't mean multi-lingual... I'm not sure what I meant!?! Need. Sleep. Now. :-) If I haven't said it before... thanks to both of you for the inspiration to move on to another agency so we can eventually meet our little guy! You're a true testament to happiness!
Hey Rob, Dede and Liam,
Video is too cute! Ron and I think Liam took a bit of Russia home with him to Texas as his hello sounds totally Russian to us. Russians often answer the phone A loa!
What a ray of sunshine and a real charmer!
Paka!
Dinia and Ron
I'm so glad that Rob is doing well and has Liam to keep his attention. Liam is too cute. I'm so glad he is enjoying daycare. I keep nursery at church and I see the tears followed quickly by smiles once parents are gone. I know it must be hard to leave him, but I'm sure he knows how much Mommy and Daddy love him and rush back to get him as soon as work is over.
So glad you are doing so well. I understand the naps too. Seems we've found ourselves taking them too in Russia. What else is there to do...oh, yeah Blog!!
I agree with Dina, sounds Russian. That's the way Pasha used to answer his cell phone. I told him it almost sounded like hello. Liam is such a doll. Thanks for the video, I can watch it when I need a Liam fix. :-)
Liam is so cute answering the phone! I'm so glad he is doing so well and that he had a good first week in daycare. I imagine that it was very hard for you all to have to return to work! I hope you all are doing well.
Sounds like you had a very busy week. I'm sure it was stressful trying to adjust to being back at work with Liam in daycare. Hope you can get some rest this weekend!
Thanks for sharing the video. He is just so adorable!!!
Rob & Dede, LOVED seeing little Liam, and trust me, our kids' first hellos were along those lines. Can't believe he's picking it up so fast! Rob, re: your comment on Susan's blog about the Delta tix, we could have really used your sneaky travel agent--the Delta guy I got must have been a Marine or possibly a pastor in his "down time," and absolutely refused to sell me the RT from Moscow I was arguing for. He is forgiven, however, as he snagged me an adoption rate fare, one way, for 75% less than quoted (still a thousand bucks after taxes, etc., sigh). Keep fingers crossed for us--we're going back for court date march 31st. All the best--love hearing how LIam's doing w/ you and Dede back at work. Sally & Carlos
Sorry, my last commented posted twice! Pls. feel free to delete :-) Sally
How cute is Liam? VERY cute! I love the video. Going back to work must be very hard for you. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers

What a cutie pie!! Glad his speech is improving. Our little guy doesn't really say anything yet so we know we will have to work on that. Glad you are settling in okay!
Your kiddo is so cute! It sounds like he's been learning some Spanish - "HOLA!" haha. Hey if anyone says anything just say he's trilingual or something... ;)
What a cutie!! I remember how hard it was to drop our boys off at daycare for the first time. But it sounds like it's going great.
Really sounds like he is saying Hola! Teaching him Spanish already?? Perhaps he picked it up from a hispanic lady at daycare.
I'm glad that you are all settling back into the routine of things.
Hi guys. Came across your blog via Rob commenting on mine. What a great chronicle! My wife and I are considering adoption in the next year to two years, so it's good to read about other couples' experiences. Thanks!
