Battling With the Glasses
Sunday, May 4, 2008
We’re on Day 5 of wearing the glasses and it’s still a battle but I think we might win someday. He does okay wearing them as long as his hands are occupied but as soon as he thinks about them, off they come! He has definitely put those titanium memory metal frame’s flexibility & durability to the test — and so far, they’re still in one piece!
We didn’t figure the daycare staff had time to work with him on keeping his glasses on so for now he only wears them after daycare until bedtime during the week. He did wear them all day yesterday & most of today. We also decided to take them off of him in the car after watching him try to mangle them in the rear view mirror!
I had to laugh when we went out to lunch today and a lady came over to our table and asked our advice on how we kept his glasses on him. Like I said, he does really well as long as his hands are occupied and since eating is a sport for him, the glasses rarely come off at mealtime!
I’ve also been rewarding him with stickers whenever he leaves his glasses on and that seems to be working pretty well too. There are times though when he just refuses to have them on. The other day I pointed out that his Daddy & I both had our glasses on and asked if he’d like to put his glasses on too. His response? "Nah."

Stickers were working with my daughter (for potty training purposes) pretty well.
Then we had to up the anty to lollipops.
I can't imagine what's next...money?
I would ask the teacher to try with the glasses. Sometimes they do better with some one other than mom and dad and he may be more distracted at daycare. Maybe with the stickers you can make a chart. When he reaches a certain amount of stickers (maybe 3)he gets to pick a small toy from a bag or something. My son took to them quickly but I think it was because his vision was so poor. If he really won't keep them on, I would tell the opthomologist because maybe they can do something else. My son also needed atropine eye drops which dilated his good eye, so he was forced to use his right eye more. The right eye crossed really bad. He got good results with the drops. Some docs don't like to us the drops but it gives the same affect as using an eye patch which my son would not keep on for ANYTHING(unless we played pirate)and you can't come home from work and play pirate for hours). Good luck. From Laura Bennett
Just thought of something else. We took my son to build a bear and had him put fake glasses on the bear that is on his dresser. You have to really build this up like it is a celebration that he has to wear glasses like daddy. Show him the Chicken Little movie and make a big fuss how he wears glasses like Liam. Jerry Macquire movie or the little boy from Meet the Robinsons. Get a carvel cake and ask them to draw a boy face with glasses and make the build a bear day really special.
