A Weekend of Fun

Tuesday, July 03, 2007

Top 5 TrophyIt was another fun year at the 8th annual Roswell R2k New Beetle Car Show this past weekend.   We met up with some of our old friends from past years and made some new ones.   It was great seeing everyone again and checking out all the bugs that entered in the show.

There was a group of Volkswagen New Beetles that started in Chicago and did a Route 66 caravan to the show and are continuing on this week to end the route in California.   Thanks to Antoine, I got a copy of all the photos the crew had taken from Chicago to Roswell and it looks like to have been a great trip.   I wished we could’ve taken time off to join in on the fun!

Top 5 trophies for each New Beetle car class were given out at the show and Caliente scored Top 5 in the Convertible class.   Yeah!   There were 2 New Beetles that I hadn’t seen before that quickly became my favorites of this year’s show.   One was The Great Pumpkin and the other was Fastball, the Cracker Jack Baseball car.   The Parade down Main Street followed the awards ceremony and, as always, we had fun throwing out candy to the kids along the street.

Roswell or Bust - Again!

Friday, June 29, 2007

Roswell or BustOnce again, we’re prepped, loaded, & on the road to the 8th Annual Roswell R2k New Beetle Car Show in Roswell, New Mexico.   Although the competition gets stiffer each year, we’re hopeful that Caliente will fare well — maybe even score another trophy — thanks in part to Cali’s newly-painted brake calipers and some new chili-pepper themed decorations.

As with the previous years’ R2k shows, we’re especially excited about the "Parade of Colors" that’s held after the car show on Saturday afternoon.   We’ve bought several pounds of candy to throw to the kids watching the parade — they always get a huge kick out of seeing all of the decorated VW New Beetles cruising down Roswell’s Main Street.

Cali Gets a Pedi

Thursday, June 14, 2007

It was a big night for Caliente;   she finally got her long overdue pedi. We’ve been talking for a couple of years about wanting to paint the brake calipers but were afraid to tackle the project alone.   Thanks to Trey (a.k.a. T-Dawg), tonight it finally happened.

It took T-Dawg & Rob about 2 hours from start to finish.   Not bad at all!   I was on-hand as the project manager & official photographer.   I trusted them with my baby and, I must say, the boyz did an awesome job!

Here’s a picture of the guys gearing up to start.   Click here to see the rest of the photos.

Cali's 15 Minutes of Fame

Caliente logo

Remember the Andy Warhol quote, "In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes?"
Well, I guess it's Caliente's turn to have a few fleeting moments of celebrity...

Although I saw the Hot VWs magazine crew taking photos, & interviewing owners at the Roswell 2k New Beetle Car Show back in June of '06, I never suspected that we were noteworthy enough to be featured.   But sure enough, we've made it into the February issue!

Caliente Meets the Alien's Approval!

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Caliente's TrophyWe’ve returned from the R2K v7 New Beetle car show with yet another unexpected win.   This time, instead of categorizing the New Beetles by year, David divided the cars up into 4 classes and awarded trophies to the top 5 in each.   Caliente made me proud (again) by taking home the Best Convertible trophy!

It was another fun trip!   We saw lots of our old friends and made several new ones.   Volkswagen reps were on-hand to show off their new EOS hardtop convertible car that’ll be released later this year and pass out all kinds of free goodies like t-shirts, keychains, & custom dog tags.   This year’s guest of honor was Barry Meguiar, the chipper host of Speed Channel’s Car Crazy TV show and CEO of Meguiar’s Inc. — makers of lots of the car care stuff that keeps Cali looking so good!

Third Time's a Charm!

Tuesday, April 04, 2006

We've returned from our 3rd Texas New Beetle Roundup - the largest annual Volkswagen New Beetle gathering in Texas. I am happy to report that Caliente won 3rd Place in the Stock Class this year. In spite of the rain — which certainly made displaying cars (much less a convertible) something of a challenge — there was a good turnout for the show. It was great to see all of the familiar faces again and we're looking forward to seeing many of them again in Roswell in June.

Beetle-Mania Revisited

Saturday, June 25, 2005

One of the highlights of the R2k v6 car show last weekend was to attend an advanced premiere of Disney's new movie Herbie: Fully Loaded at the Fiesta Drive-In in Carlsbad, NM. Disney and Volkswagen were on-hand to arrange a recreation of a classic photo that was used in the original Herbie advertisement.

Caliente was fortunate enough to be part of this photo shoot. The photo shoot is supposed to be used in the trailers of the new movie and will also be released on the DVD. VW has posted both the new and original photos on their website. Caliente is located on the 3rd row up from the bottom in between a yellow and blue (with a ski rack) new beetle. Herbie and his girlfriend Sally are located on the bottom row.

Caliente is available for autographs upon requests!

R2k v6 - We've Arrived!

Friday, June 17, 2005

We arrived in Roswell at noon today and were able to get an early check-in at the hotel after stopping by Wienerschnitzel first of course!!! Normally cleaning up Caliente would be first on the list but it is so hot here that swimming bumped up to the number one spot. After a relaxing swim and a nap, we got Cali to her much needed bath and picked up our registration packet for the show. The goodie bag is outstanding this year. It includes a Herbie movie poster, Herbie antenna ball, VW Vert glow necklace, swiss-army like knife with the show info engraved on it, VW note pad, R2k coaster and a number of other misc. items. See photo below of the freebies. We are about to head out to the group dinner and glow parade. Stay tuned for more info and pictures!

Off to Meet the Mothership - Again!

It all started with one simple statement: "Reverse Engineered From UFOs." Now, hundreds of Volkswagen New Beetles will converge for the sixth annual Roswell 2k New Beetle Car Show in Roswell, New Mexico. This national event draws in New Beetle owners from every corner of the U.S. - and maybe even a few other-worldly places too...

So we're heading out early this morning in Caliente for our 2nd trip to Roswell.

A 100 in the Shade

Friday, May 20, 2005

It was a hot one today - 100° in the shade!   We took Caliente to work today and drove home with the top down.   I guess summer has officially arrived in Texas.   I snapped this picture under a shade tree in our driveway.   Hard to believe its only May and we’re reaching triple digits already!

Thermometer shows 100 degrees in the shade

Texas New Beetle Roundup '05

Thursday, April 14, 2005

We're back from last weekend's Texas New Beetle Roundup 2005 and it was a blast! We enjoyed getting to see all of the familiar faces from last year's show and meet many new VW owners too. There were over 50 VW New Beetles entered in the competition and, while we didn't win a trophy in our class, Caliente placed 5th out of 14 in the "Modified Stock' division. Considering how many of the awesome NB's in her category that were far more tricked out, I'm proud that Cali placed so well. I have the distinction, however, of winning the "Worst Luck" prize for the cards I drew during the Road Rally/Poker Run on Sunday morning. This scavenger hunt was a real kick and we're already revved up for next year's.

Big thanks go out to the Dallas/Ft. Worth New Beetle Club for a great show!

Monday, June 21, 2004

We just returned from the Roswell R2k New Beetle Show. It was an awesome show with lots of cool bugs. The parade down Main Street after the show was led by Dean Jones from the Herbie movies. We had fun throwing candy to the kids lined up to watch the parade. It was great to see the people from the Dallas show again and make new friends from around the country.

Roswell 2K Car Show for New Beetles

Monday, June 14, 2004

Roswell 2K Car Show for Volkwagen New Beetles

When Volkswagen introduced their New Beetle (a freshly updated version of the classic model) in 1998, the advertisements claimed it to be "Reverse Engineered from UFO's." This week, several New Beetle caravans will begin cross-country treks from strategic points across the nation for the 5th annual "Roswell 2K Car Show Weekend," on June 18 - 20.

Roswell, the infamous site of an alleged, government-suppressed, UFO crash in 1947, will be host to an estimated crowd of more than 20,000 people, making it the biggest New Beetle event in the world. And conservative estimates put the number of Volkswagen New Beetles that will be displayed in the show at well over 500.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. will, for the first time, have an official presence this year as hosts of the evening "Sky Watch Party," Friday, June 18th where participants just might witness a UFO landing.

The 3-day event centers around the New Beetle car show on Saturday, June 19th at the Convention Center in downtown Roswell, followed by a New Beetle Parade down Roswell's historic Main Street. Dean Jones, from the original Disney "Love Bug" movies will serve as parade Grand Marshall. The Roswell Zoo will host an "Alien Picnic" event featuring an Alien Costume Contest, food, and games for the kids.

On Sunday, New Beetle owners will tour the International UFO Museum and then cruise to Carlsbad, NM for the "Buffalo Hump Rally." Later that night, the New Beetles will take in a flick at the local drive-in movie theatre.

Returning this year is Podvision, a rolling live webcam documenting the trek from Durham, NC to Roswell and then the event itself. You can begin monitoring their progress when Podvision begins realtime broadcasting on Tuesday morning, June 15th.

Day Trippers

Saturday, May 29, 2004

Dede and I made a quick trip up to Lubbock today to see some of the fine service folks, like Terry & Harold, at Gene Messer VW about a intermittent faulty fuel cap switch on Caliente.

While in Lubbock, we grabbed lunch at one of Dede's favorite places for good eats... Joe's Crab Shack.

Dede finds peace & love at Joe's!

Cali's a Winner!

Monday, May 17, 2004

The Texas New Beetle Roundup over the weekend was a whole lotta fun! We were finally able to put some faces with the names we've come to know on the Org. There were nearly 50 VW New Beetles that displayed in the show and 14 in my class (Stock). I was so shocked that Caliente won 3rd Place in her division. Especially considering all of the other awesome NB's in her category, I didn't think Cali stood a chance. I want to thank the TNBRU and Metro for a great show and a great trophy!
